The Graduate Student Council (GSC) is the primary political and social body for the approximately 1,650 graduate students at Brown. The GSC is made up of representatives from each department and of officers elected from the entire graduate student population. The GSC holds monthly meetings where topics relevant to graduate student life are discussed. Please visit their website for more information.

Listservs The GSC has set up three listservs for the graduate student community. These can be very useful for finding or posting apartment listings, buying and selling a variety of items, or just asking the graduate community general questions about area services (e.g., "Does anyone know a good dentist?"). To access these lists, or to contact any member of the GSC executive board or your department representative, visit the GSC website.

  • GSNOTICE is for event announcements and these events are generally Brown affiliated. GSNOTICE is moderated, meaning posts are checked for appropriateness before they are distributed to the list. For this reason, it may take a day or two for a posting to reach the community.
  • GSBB is for "bulletin board"-type announcements, such as community-related events or announcements, for-sale items, apartment listings, roommate searches, posts by people looking for tennis partners or rides to the airport, questions about the community, opinions about local services (mechanics, dentists), and graduate student protocol questions.
  • GSCOMM is for political discussions. Any comments about current events, opinions about the way things are handled in the graduate school or community should be posted to this list.

Graduate Student Wiki The Graduate Student Council has created anbd maintains a wiki for sharing a wide variety of information about campus life, offices, and services, as well as general information about Providence.

Graduate Student Lounge The Graduate Student Council holds its monthly meetings and a number of other functions in the Graduate Student Lounge. The lounge, located on the ground floor of the Graduate Center (47 Charlesfield Street), is available for graduate student functions and can be reserved through the GSC. Visit the GSC Web site for lounge-use policies and the reservation form. The lounge is open 24/7 and is accessible to graduate students only via their Brown Cards. The room has its own wireless computer network, and its entertainment center is used to host everything from movie nights and salsa dancing classes to GSC-sponsored social events.

Student Organizations The majority of student organizations at Brown are geared toward the undergraduate population, but many welcome the participation and involvement of graduate students. Consult the list of student organizations on the Brown website for more information.
