Brown University awards, through its Graduate School, the advanced degrees of master of arts, master of arts in teaching, master of fine arts, master of medical science, master of public affairs, master of public health, master of public policy, master of science, and doctor of philosophy. There is also a joint M.D.- Ph.D. program which is offered in conjunction with the Brown Medical School.
Most divisions, departments, and programs accept applicants for both the master's and the Ph.D. degree; however, many accept only students pursuing a doctoral degree.
Brown encourages scholarly work that crosses disciplinary boundaries and cannot be accommodated within an existing doctoral program by offering a Ph.D. in Special Studies.
Each graduate program has its own standard of quality and achievement which must be met. The mere mechanical fulfillment of the stated basic requirements will not by itself earn any advanced degree.
