Brown's M.D./Ph.D. program is an opportunity to attain both the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees over a period of six to nine years. The program combines the study of clinical medicine with extensive biomedical research training. There are few scientific fields that have evolved and advanced as rapidly as modern biology in recent years. The M.D./Ph.D. program is designed to provide aspiring physician-scientists with a combination of biomedical research skills and clinical aptitudes that will allow them to make unique and significant contributions to patients, medical science, and society.
Students in the M.D./Ph.D. program generally spend their first two years taking the basic medical science courses that are required of all medical students. During this time they also begin to establish the focus of their research. Students are encouraged to explore the widest range of topics before deciding on an advisor and a Ph.D. concentration; they typically do one or two research lab rotations before entering the Graduate School years. Students then spend the next two to five years completing the requirements for the Ph.D. Two years of clinical studies follow to fulfill the requirements for the M.D.
