Summer Support Application

All doctoral students admitted as fellows are also guaranteed three years of summer support. This support is intended for students to conduct research, study for their preliminary examinations, work on their dissertations, etc. -- however it can do the most good in helping students advance toward their degrees.

Students in the physical and life sciences are typically supported through the summer on grant and department-based funding. Summer funding for students in the humanities and social sciences and a few other programs is typically paid by the Graduate School at a rate of $2,500 for the summer. These students may elect to use their guaranteed three summers of support at any time during years one through five at the University, though they will automatically receive this support during the summers following their first three years unless they request a deferral from the Graduate School.

The Graduate School can provide support to a limited number of additional students in the summer. To be eligible, students must have either deferred summer funding in a previous year (in which case they must provide documentatiuon of their deferral), or they have entered on support other than a fellowship but have not already received more than three summers of support. Since departments are in the best position to know who among their students will most benefit from summer support, ALL nominations must be made through the department chair or director of graduate study.

As with all issues related to financial support, students with questions should contact their department chair or director of graduate study.
