DOCTORAL PROGRAMS Italian StudiesThe Italian studies program offers students the opportunity to study the language, history, and culture of Italy under the guidance of internationally renowned scholars in anthropology, history, history of art and architecture, literature, and modern culture and media. Thanks to an exchange program between Brown and the University of Bologna, our regular graduate faculty is consistently supplemented by the addition of distinguished visiting professors from Italy. Additional resources: Audiovisual equipment, online resources for teaching and research (see program Web site), departmental library and reading room. Completion requirements: Ph.D.: Sixteen courses (at least 12 of which must be in Italian Studies), including: Teaching Methods (IT2900), Introduction to Italian Studies (IT2100), and Italian Studies Colloquium (IT2820); at least three courses in medieval/early modern Italy (one of which must be a course on Dante) and three in modern/contemporary Italy; At least one course in three of the four disciplinary fields (Italian literature; Italian history and anthropology; history of Italian art and architecture; Italian film and media studies); a minimum of two years of language teaching; two foreign languages other than Italian; First Year Review; Preliminary Examination; Dissertation and oral defense.
