Dear Colleagues and Students,
Contact and collaboration are high on my agenda this month. My senior staff and I continue to break bread with first-year students, 30 at a time, to get to know them and the issues affecting their studies and lives at Brown.
We recently met with program chairs and directors of graduate study, too. Among the topics was encouraging graduate students and faculty to talk regularly about professional-development goals and progress. To aid those conversations, we offered them a template for advising and mentoring agreements, which can be customized by students, postdoctoral appointees, and professors. Later this month, we plan to visit each program, where we can focus on trends at the program level.
On National Postdoc Day, we got some exercise. Our new assistant dean of recruiting and professional development, Jabbar Bennett, and I fanned out across the campus to deliver carnations for our postdoctoral appointees. We appreciate their role in research and teaching at Brown.
My office door is open to graduate students and postdocs, during office hours each Monday and by appointment. Please see the calendar on the homepage for details or contact Nancy Picard.
