Archaeology Team Finds Royal Treasures: Brown archaeologists in Guatemala have discovered a tightly-sealed 1,600-year-old Mayan king's tomb, packed with a well-preserved hoard of carvings, ceramics, and children's bones that cast fresh light on the vanished civilization.
"It's like their Fort Knox, their depositary of wealth... that's what's overwhelming about it," says Professor of Archaeology Stephen Houston, the dig's director at El Zotz. The team includes graduate students Sarah Newman(above), Nick Carter, James Doyle, Alex Knodell, Alex Smith, and former postdoctoral fellow Thomas Garrison.

New Home for New Cognitive, Linguistic, and Psychological Sciences Department
A $42-million renovation of the Metcalf laboratories is underway, creating an 81,000-square-foot space for the newly formed Department of Cognitive, Linguistic, and Psychological Sciences, with new classrooms, laboratories, and meeting and lounge areas to support collaborative work.
Brown Creates School of Engineering
Brown created a School of Engineering on July 1. The move "underscores the University’s commitment to educating students and future scholars and leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines," says President Ruth Simmons.

Student-written Climate Bill Set to Become Law
Graduate students Sara Mersha and Dayanch Hojagyeldiyev (Environmental Studies) helped author the Climate Risk Reduction Act of 2010, recently passed by the Rhode Island General Assembly and expected to become law this summer.
