Graduates of non-U.S. colleges and universities who have completed the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree may apply for admission to the Brown University Graduate School. Along with the application, international applicants must provide the Graduate School with original documents or official certified copies indicating the nature and scope of their educational program.

FINANCES
Expenses for international students for the 2008-2009 academic year at Brown are estimated at approximately $58,000. This includes $36,928 for tuition and fees, $18,500 for living expenses, and $2,500 for health insurance (coverage for a student's spouse and children will be an additional $3,000 to $4,000). International students who are not awarded financial assistance will not be granted final admission until they provide certified proof of financial support (including travel to and from the U.S.) adequate to meet annual expenses.
Because expenses will be highest during the first month at Brown and stipend checks are not issued until mid-September to those students who receive financial assistance, international students should have at least $1,500 to cover relocation and living expenses during their first month in Providence.
International graduate students are strongly encouraged not to bring their families during the first semester of study. This gives students time to familiarize themselves with their surroundings, settle into their work, and look for suitable living accommodations. Brown does not offer on-campus housing for married graduate students. To obtain permission to bring a spouse, a student must have $5,000 on deposit in an American bank for the spouse's support. The amount required to bring in each child is $3,000. The deposit must be authenticated by a notarized statement from the bank holding the student's funds.
Applicants who are not in the United States at the time of application are strongly encouraged to apply through the scholarship committee of the Institute of International Education in their home countries. Information about local committees of the IIE may be obtained at http://www.iie.org/ or through US Embassies or Consulates.
